Motor Sensory Integration and Maths

Rebecca Hanson interviews Charlotte Davies about Motor Sensory Integration

I’ve often written about the challenges associated with teaching maths to children who are only 4 years old (that most countries teach when they are 7). These include lack of short-term memory (to manipulate information), lack of long-term memory (to retain information) and lack of foundational skills (such as having an understanding of what number is).

Charlotte Davies has identified another substantial issue, which is that children young children simply can’t take in information through their senses because their sensory inputs are not properly linked up. In this interview she explains these barriers and what can be done about them to help our children learn maths despite these challenges.
